The Universe Is Watching: What If the Stars Could See Us?
Fatima HanifShare
We have spent centuries looking at the universe.
Through telescopes.
Through observatories.
Through photographs of galaxies millions of light-years away.
But there is a strange question we rarely ask.
What if something is looking back?
The Universe Is Watching began with that thought.
At the centre of the artwork, an enormous cosmic eye emerges from a burning nebula. Stars and clouds of celestial dust form its shape as a tiny human figure stands beneath it.
The figure is almost invisible compared to the universe above.
And yet, the eye has noticed them.
The Fear of Being Seen
Space is often described as empty.
Silent.
Infinite.
But perhaps the most unsettling idea is not that we are alone.
Perhaps it is the possibility that we are not.
The artwork explores humanity's small place within an unimaginably large universe. The tiny figure represents us—curious enough to look into the darkness, yet never completely prepared for the darkness to acknowledge our existence.
The cosmic eye is not necessarily a creature.
It may be the universe itself.
Watching.
Remembering.
Waiting.
After all, we have been watching the stars for thousands of years.
Perhaps they finally noticed.
